FCDP Board's Corner - Week of February 1st PDF Print E-mail
Fifty years ago, on Feb. 1, 1960, four black students at N.C. A&T sat down at the segregated lunch counter at the F.W. Woolworth store in downtown Greensboro. Although they were not served, they remained seated at the counter.  There was no violence and no one was arrested.  The following morning the four students, along with 23 other men and 4 women showed up at Woolworth's to protest. As the days went on, more and more students from N.C. A&T University as well as surrounding area schools participated in the Woolworth sit-in. By February 5, four days after the sit-in began, 300 students arrived at Woolworth's to take part in the peaceful protest.  The movement spread throughout the south despite occasional violence.  Although the road was not easy, this one act finally led to the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

To these four students, we are grateful.
